Set up a pour-over coffee station around the order in which you work: grind, weigh, heat, pour, drain and clean. Start by giving the scale, server and dripper one stable brewing position. Place the grinder on one side and the kettle on the other, then store filters and beans within one reach. The wet filter and dripping brewer need a short route to the trash, compost container or sink.
This workflow-first approach is more useful than lining up every coffee accessory. It keeps the active counter clear, shows which tools you actually need and makes it easier to reset the station after each brew.
What a pour-over coffee station actually needs
The full system can include a grinder, scale, kettle, dripper, matching filters and a server or mug. HARIO鈥檚 V60 competition equipment list contains all of those categories, but a home station does not need competition-level versions of each item. Buy enough to make the process repeatable; add specialist accessories only when they solve a problem you can name.

A gooseneck kettle is useful because it gives the user more control over flow, but it is not a universal entry fee. HARIO鈥檚 Drip-Assist, for example, is designed to distribute water through two sets of holes and can work with a conventional kettle or electric pot. Your dripper, desired technique and available space should determine the upgrade.
Build the station around the brewing tower
The center of the station is not the grinder or a filter holder. It is the vertical stack used during brewing:
- Scale
- Server or mug
- Dripper
- Paper or reusable filter
HARIO鈥檚 V60 Drip Scale instructions call for a flat, stable, nonslip surface, with the container centered on the weighing platform. The instructions also combine weighing, taring and timing in the same process. That makes the scale an active platform, not an accessory to retrieve from a distant drawer.
Set up the complete tower and check four things. You should be able to read the display, press tare or start the timer, pour from above without hitting a cabinet and lift the filled server away without catching the dripper on a shelf. Include the weight of the server, dripper, grounds and brewing water when checking the scale鈥檚 capacity.

Do not put a rail or shelf directly above the brewer merely because the empty dripper fits. The pouring hand, kettle body and stream all occupy space during use. Test the station with the person who will brew most often; left- and right-handed users may prefer opposite arrangements.
Arrange the dry side: beans, grinder and scale
Place the grinder next to the brewing tower when beans are weighed before grinding. The shortest practical sequence is beans to scale, scale to grinder, then grounds to filter. It should be possible to remove the catch cup and transfer grounds without crossing the kettle cord or carrying loose coffee over a wet sink edge.
Keep daily beans in an opaque or otherwise suitable closed container according to the roaster鈥檚 storage guidance. Backup bags can live in a cabinet. Displaying several open bags on the main counter uses valuable space and makes it harder to clean scattered grounds.
Leave enough room to brush around the grinder. Baratza notes that coffee oils, fine particles and chaff can build up in the burr chamber and exit chute. Its cleaning guidance includes washing removable hoppers and grounds bins and drying them thoroughly. A grinder pressed tightly between a wall and tall organizer may look compact but is difficult to maintain.
Hand grinder layout
A hand grinder can live in a drawer or upright compartment, but its catch cup, handle and lid should remain together. Give yourself a clear place to hold or brace the grinder while turning. Do not let a hanging handle swing into glass servers.
Electric grinder layout
Keep the power cord behind the grinder without crossing the active brewing surface. Preserve access to the hopper and burr-removal path described by the manufacturer. If the grinder creates static or stray grounds, a shallow removable mat can make daily cleanup easier than a fixed decorative tray.
Give the kettle its own operating zone
An electric gooseneck kettle needs more than its visible body width. It needs a level base, a safe cord route, room to remove the lid and fill the vessel, and a clear path for lifting and returning the hot kettle.
Fellow lists the base of several EKG models at approximately 171 by 172 millimeters, or 6.73 by 6.77 inches, with manufacturing tolerance. That figure is not a universal kettle dimension; it demonstrates why you should measure the exact base rather than estimating from the narrow neck of the vessel.
Fellow鈥檚 Stagg EKG instructions say the base and kettle should be on a flat surface and the spout should not be close to or aimed toward a wall or cabinet. Apply that rule to the operating position, not just the way the kettle looks when cold. Steam and hot water need a clear direction.
Place the kettle on the side from which you naturally pour. Keep the cord away from the scale display, counter edge and nearby hot appliances. If the only outlet forces the cord across the brewing area, change the station location instead of making the cord part of the daily obstacle course.
Keep water convenient without putting electricity in the wet zone
The shortest route to the sink is useful for refilling and cleaning, but the powered base should remain dry. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission advises keeping countertop appliances away from the sink; where relocation is not possible, its checklist calls for GFCI-protected outlets. Follow local electrical rules and the appliance manual.
Carry the kettle body or another approved water container to the sink. Do not slide the powered base into the splash area. Keep a dry landing place for the vessel and wipe its exterior before returning it to the base.
Store filters by shape and keep them dry
Paper filters should stay clean, dry and easy to identify. Store the size used every day beside the dripper in a closed drawer, covered holder or clean vertical slot. Backup packages can go in a cabinet. Avoid placing open filters beside the sink, waste bin, spice steam or the grinder鈥檚 loose-grounds zone.
Match the filter to the brewer rather than buying a generic display holder first. Cone, wave and folded square filters do not always sit well in the same organizer. A holder that bends the seams or exposes half the stack may create more trouble than the original package.
If you alternate between brewers, label the compartment by brewer and size. Keep only the active stack at hand. This is one of the few places where vertical storage is usually more useful than extra countertop depth.
Store the dripper and server as a working pair
After cleaning and drying, the dripper can rest on its server if the combination is stable and the materials will not chip or trap moisture. Otherwise, place them side by side on a low shelf or divided drawer. Keep fragile glass away from a heavy grinder handle or kettle.

The photograph above illustrates the compact vertical relationship between dripper and server, but it is not a drying instruction for every product. Follow the material-specific care guidance and allow components to dry fully before closing them inside a cabinet. A removable, washable tray under the drying area can collect stray drops without turning the entire coffee station into a wet zone.
Mugs can be stored above or beside the station if they do not block the pouring path. Keep the one or two cups used most often close; bulk mug storage does not need to occupy the brewing counter.
Plan the cleanup before you plan the display
Every brew produces a wet filter or reusable filter, spent grounds and a dripper that can continue to drip. Their destination determines whether the station stays clean.
For paper filters, place the trash or accepted compost container on the shortest route from the brewer. Confirm local compost rules rather than assuming the filter and grounds are accepted. Lift the filter only after draining and use a small washable bowl if the route crosses the floor.
For reusable filters, the sink route matters more. Remove grounds in the appropriate waste location before rinsing, and follow the filter manufacturer鈥檚 care instructions. Do not leave a damp metal or cloth filter sealed in a decorative container.
Keep one grounds brush or cloth close to the grinder and another washable cloth for water drips if needed. Do not use the same cloth indefinitely for coffee oils, counter spills and kettle cleaning. HARIO鈥檚 power-kettle instructions say to unplug and cool the appliance before cleaning and not to submerge the complete kettle. The electrical base belongs in the dry zone even when the vessel is being maintained.
Three layouts that work in real homes
Small countertop station
Use one compact brewing tower, a grinder to the nondominant side and a kettle to the pouring side. Put filters in the first drawer and backup beans below. Store the clean dripper on the server when the combination is stable. The active counter should contain only the objects used for nearly every cup.
If there is no room for a dedicated electric kettle, use an existing safe hot-water source and a compatible flow-control method. Do not buy a second appliance solely to make the station look complete.
Coffee cabinet or appliance garage
Measure open-door clearance, upper clearance for pouring and ventilation required by each electrical product. Brewing inside a closed or shallow cabinet can block the kettle hand and hide steam damage until it appears. Pull-out shelves are useful only when they are rated for the full load, remain stable during pouring and preserve a safe cord route.
Keep filters and beans in the dry upper or side compartments. Put the waste route and drying tray near the cabinet opening so wet equipment does not have to pass over stored supplies.
Rolling cart
A cart can work when its top is rigid and does not move while grinding or pouring. Locking casters, adequate load capacity and a safe outlet position are essential. Do not roll a cart while the kettle is hot or full. Store glass low enough that it cannot tip, but not in a bin where heavy tools can strike it.
Use the top for the brew tower and kettle only during operation; give the grinder and filters secure compartments. The cart should move for room planning, not during the brew.
The 60-second station test
Before buying an organizer or cabinet, mark the proposed layout with painter鈥檚 tape and use the real equipment or cardboard stand-ins.
- Measure beans and transfer them to the grinder.
- Place the server, dripper and filter on the scale and tare it.
- Fill, lift and return the kettle without crossing the cord.
- Perform the complete pouring motion beneath the lowest cabinet or shelf.
- Lift the filled server away and set the wet dripper down.
- Carry the filter and grounds to their waste destination.
- Move the dripper and server to the sink and then to the drying position.
- Brush loose grounds and return every item to storage.
If an object must be moved out of the way and then moved back during every brew, it is stored on the wrong part of the counter. If the hand, kettle or dripper hits a shelf, the station lacks operating clearance even if all products fit when idle.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a gooseneck kettle for pour-over coffee?
Not in every setup. A gooseneck offers controlled flow and is a common choice, but some brewers or flow-assist tools can work with other safe hot-water sources. Choose based on the brewing method, control you need and available counter space.
Should the scale stay on the counter?
If you brew frequently, yes. The scale is the base of the active brewing tower and should sit on a stable surface where its display and controls remain visible. Infrequent users can store it in a dry drawer, but retrieving it should not require unloading several objects.
Can filters be stored in an open holder?
They can if the location remains dry, clean and away from food splatter, steam and loose grounds. A covered holder or drawer is usually more protective in an active kitchen.
How much counter space does a pour-over station need?
