As a planning starting point, allow about 18–24 inches of continuous width for a compact capsule setup, 24–30 inches for an all-in-one espresso machine, and 36–48 inches for a separate machine and grinder. Those are not universal minimums. Your real requirement is the machine's full working envelope: every lid, tank, portafilter, steam wand and drip tray in motion, plus a clear landing area.
The safest way to size a home espresso station is simple: measure the equipment, map the moving parts, tape the layout at full scale, and make one drink from start to finish before buying furniture.
Product dimensions are only the starting point
A coffee machine can fit on a cabinet and still be impossible to use there.
Breville lists the Barista Express at 12.5 inches wide, 13.8 inches deep and 15.9 inches high. But its manual also shows a removable bean hopper, a 54 mm portafilter, a removable drip tray and a 360-degree swivel steam wand. Think of the machine dimensions as the parked footprint. You need to design around the working footprint.
Use this four-part measurement method
1. Find the working width
Place the machine where you intend to use it. Lock and unlock the portafilter, swing the steam wand to its normal position, set down the milk pitcher and remove the drip tray.
Measure from the furthest left position reached by any part to the furthest right position. Then add the grinder, knock box or tamping mat only if it will remain on the same surface.
Do not fill every remaining inch with canisters. Keep one clear section large enough for the widest loose item in the routine—usually a water tank, drip tray, scale or milk pitcher.
2. Find the working depth
Measure from the wall to the furthest forward point while the machine is being used. Include:
- the plug and a natural bend in the power cord;
- any rear water tank that must lift or slide out;
- the full machine feet, which need stable support;
- the portafilter handle and drip tray when pulled forward;
- any cabinet lip or door that reduces the usable top.
A nominal 16-inch-deep top does not offer 16 usable inches if a back panel, cable channel or raised front edge takes part of it away.
3. Find the working height
Measure the machine with its bean hopper and water-tank lid open. If a tank lifts out vertically, reproduce that motion. Also check whether cups stored above the machine will be exposed to heat or block access.
The closed height is useful for shipping. The open height determines whether a shelf can actually sit above the machine.
4. Protect a continuous landing zone
An espresso station needs empty surface, not just storage capacity. The landing zone is where you weigh beans, set down a filled tank, place a clean portafilter, rest a milk pitcher and catch a spill before it reaches the floor.

If you make mostly straight espresso, your milk area can be smaller. If you prepare two milk drinks every morning, a second pitcher, knock box and towel will quickly consume the difference. If a machine is plumbed in, its installation and service clearances matter more than these editorial ranges.
Arrange the surface in drink-making order
Once the rectangle is large enough, arrange it around the routine:
Store → Dose → Grind → Tamp → Brew → Steam → Serve → Reset
For a right-handed user, the grinder and tamping area may work well to the left of the machine, leaving the right side open for the portafilter handle and milk pitcher. A left-handed user may prefer the reverse. The correct direction depends on the machine controls, nearby wall and water route—not on visual symmetry.
Keep the most frequent transitions short. Beans belong near the grinder. The tamper belongs where the portafilter rests. The towel belongs near the steam wand. A knock box should be reachable without carrying a dripping puck over cups or dry ingredients.
Move unopened beans, spare filters, seasonal mugs and cleaning tablets to secondary storage. The working surface should contain what is used during the drink, not everything associated with coffee.
Check power before choosing the corner
An outlet is not automatically suitable because the plug reaches it. Read the safety instructions for your exact machine and follow local electrical requirements.
Breville's safety instructions for one home espresso model recommend a properly grounded dedicated circuit and warn against arranging a cord where it can be pulled by a child or become a trip hazard. Before ordering a cabinet, reproduce its usable top at full scale.
- Mark the proposed width and depth on the existing counter or a sheet of cardboard.
- Mark any back panel, raised edge, wall return or cabinet side that reduces access.
- Place the real machine, grinder and daily tools inside the outline.
- Fill the water tank and bean hopper.
- Make the most complicated drink you prepare regularly.
- Empty the puck, drip tray and milk pitcher.
- Wipe the machine and surface, then return every tool.
If you lift the machine, collide with a shelf, balance a tank over the sink, or temporarily put a hot pitcher on another piece of furniture, the proposed station is too small or poorly arranged.
Do not overlook reach and furniture stability
High shelves add capacity, but not always usable capacity.
