Backflushing cleans a compatible brew-group path
A blind basket blocks the normal exit through the portafilter. On a machine designed for backflushing, controlled pressure-and-release cycles send water and, when specified, espresso-machine detergent through parts of the group and exhaust path. La Marzocco's Micra and Mini backflush explanation describes the process as removal of coffee oils and residues from group components.
That description does not grant permission to backflush every machine. Machines without the necessary valve or approved cycle may not route water safely. If the manual does not specify a blind basket, clean cycle, or backflush method, do not invent one.
Descaling treats mineral deposition
Descaler is intended to dissolve mineral deposits in the water path that the manufacturer authorizes for treatment. It does not remove rancid coffee oil from a portafilter, and an espresso detergent does not dissolve boiler scale.
The distinction matters because mineral scale can break into particles, expose other faults, or interact with metals and seals during an incorrect procedure. Use the specified product concentration, temperature state, route, pause time, and rinse volume. More acid and more contact time are not automatically better.
What to clean after every espresso
When the shot finishes, remove the portafilter when pressure has released according to the machine instructions. Knock out the puck rather than leaving wet coffee locked against the screen.
Then:
- rinse or wipe the basket and portafilter using the approved method;
- inspect the basket holes for retained grounds;
- flush the group for the manual's stated duration, if the machine directs a flush;

Do not use the brewing group as a storage clamp for a dirty puck. Heat can bake residue onto surfaces, while trapped moisture and grounds make the next session harder to clean.
If you make several drinks together, you can rinse between shots and complete the fuller surface clean at the end of the session. The important point is to prevent a day's wet coffee from becoming tomorrow's hard deposit.
What to clean after every milk drink
Milk care is immediate. As soon as the pitcher is removed, point the wand safely toward the drip tray and purge it for the duration specified by the machine. Wipe the exterior with a dedicated damp cloth while residue is still removable and the wand is safe to approach.

The Breville Bambino Plus manual directs users to wipe the wand after texturing and manually purge it; when holes remain obstructed, it provides a model-specific tip-cleaning procedure. For automatic milk hoses, carafes, and frothers, follow the separate rinse and wash program. A purge that clears steam holes is not the same as washing a milk container or tube.

FDA research on allergen removal from food-contact surfaces found that removal depends on the residue, surface, and wiping method, and that full cleaning outperformed casual wiping in the tested retail setting. At the end of the brewing session:
- empty the drip tray before standing liquid overflows or becomes stale;
- empty wet coffee waste from the knock box;

How often should you backflush?

- water-only backflush or rinse: more frequent removal of loose residue;
- detergent backflush or programmed clean cycle: less frequent removal of accumulated coffee oils.
Do not assume the same number of pump-on seconds, repetitions, detergent mass, or soak time across machines. Breville's Infuser manual, for example, provides a particular cleaning disc, tablet, indicator, and button sequence. A La Marzocco app-assisted cycle follows another path.

How often should you descale?
There is no honest universal answer such as monthly, quarterly, or every 200 shots. Descale timing depends on:
- source-water hardness and alkalinity;
- chloride, pH, and other chemistry relevant to the machine;
- effective treatment or filtration;
- water volume heated;
- boiler, thermoblock, and hydraulic design;
- machine prompts and configured hardness;
- the manufacturer's ownership and service policy.
The U.S. Geological Survey explains that when hard water is heated, calcium carbonate can form solid scale that reduces equipment life and heating efficiency and can clog passages. That is the mechanism behind water-dependent descale schedules.
But “use zero-mineral water” is not a safe universal correction. La Marzocco's water specifications warn that very low mineral content, low pH, or high chloride can make water unsuitable and potentially corrosive in a hot, pressurized machine. A common carbon taste filter may change odor without sufficiently controlling hardness.
Use a manufacturer water-test strip, an appropriate laboratory or utility report, or a validated test method. Enter or interpret the result using the machine maker's limits. Replace filters by date or treated-water capacity, not by appearance alone.
When the descale trigger arrives:
- confirm that the displayed alert means descale, not clean;
- obtain the approved descaler and exact concentration;
- remove or retain the water filter as instructed;
- cool, empty, or power the machine as the sequence requires;
- place a container large enough for the stated volume;
- complete the entire treatment and every freshwater rinse;
- reset the alert only after the procedure is actually complete.
Do not use vinegar merely because it dissolves household scale. Odor, concentration, material compatibility, seals, metals, and rinse requirements vary. If the manual names a product or chemistry, use that specification. If the manufacturer prohibits owner descaling, arrange service.
Build your own schedule from drink volume
Start with the manual, then convert its wording into a visible log.
1. Count a normal week
Record straight espresso shots, milk-steaming events, and liters of water used. Milk events set wand workload; shots set group and portafilter workload; liters and water chemistry influence scale and filter capacity.
2. Separate the three clocks
- Contact clock: tasks after each shot or milk use.

- water leaking inside the case or near electricity;
- a damaged cord, plug, switch, or repeated breaker trip;
- persistent leakage around a clean, correctly locked portafilter;
- corrosion, metal fragments, or unknown debris;
- a pump that becomes abnormally loud, silent, or intermittent;
- no flow after the approved basket, tank, and descale checks;
- unstable temperature or pressure that persists after normal maintenance;
- a steam valve that will not close;
- an alert that returns immediately after a correctly completed cycle;
- a procedure the manufacturer reserves for a technician.
Descaling a severely scaled boiler can dislodge material without repairing a restricted valve or damaged heater. Repeated chemical cycles are not a substitute for diagnosis.
