You do not automatically need a heat mat under an espresso machine. Start with the exact machine manual and the care instructions for the exact countertop or finish. Add a suitable barrier only when one of those documents recommends heat isolation, normal use produces repeatable surface changes, or the surface maker treats the appliance as a heat-producing unit that needs protection.

If the laminate maker calls for isolation, clarify what type it means. A solid, spaced trivet behaves differently from a thin flexible sheet. Protect the seams and backsplash joint from water as a separate task. Do not bridge a swollen seam with a mat and continue operating; the damaged substrate needs assessment.

Engineered quartz and stone

Stone appearance does not mean unlimited heat resistance. Cambria warns that sudden temperature change and direct or sustained heating can damage its quartz surfaces and recommends a closed-weave hot pad or solid trivet beneath hot cooking units. Ask the fabricator whether the exact machine’s long-duration base heat needs isolation and what barrier preserves the warranty. Avoid improvised materials that concentrate load at a few points or stain the resin system.
