For a dependable French press, start with 60 g of coffee per liter of water—a 1:16.7 ratio—use a medium-coarse grind, add water around 94–96°C (201–205°F), steep for four minutes, then press slowly and pour all the coffee into cups or a separate carafe.

That is a starting system, not a law. Use the coffee-to-water ratio to choose strength first. Then adjust grind and water temperature to change extraction and taste. Steep time is a useful control, but leaving a weak recipe longer is usually less predictable than correcting the dose.

Do not “cool the water for exactly 30 seconds” and assume the same result every time. Kettle material, room temperature, water volume, lid position, and pour speed all change cooling.

Traditional four-minute French press method

1. Weigh the coffee and water

For 500 g water, weigh 30 g coffee. Confirm that this batch leaves safe headspace in your press.

2. Grind immediately before brewing

Use a medium-coarse starting setting. Smell the grounds and check for an unusually large amount of fine powder, which can increase sediment and resistance.

3. Add coffee and start the timer with the pour

Place the press on a dry, stable scale. Add the grounds, tare the scale, and pour water evenly enough to wet all the coffee. Manual pouring creates turbulence, so use a repeatable pattern rather than changing from a violent center pour to a delicate edge pour each day.

5. Cover and wait four minutes

Place the lid on with the plunger raised above the coffee. Keep the spout closed if the lid has a rotating safety position. Allow the coffee to steep without pressing early.

Does a longer steep make French press bitter?

If the coffee tastes weak

Use three brews instead of changing variables randomly:
