There is no single correct height for floating shelves above a coffee bar. The first shelf should clear the coffee machine in its fully operated state—lid open, reservoir moving, bean hopper accessible and your hand in place—plus any clearance required by the appliance maker. The space between shelves should come from the tallest item you plan to store and the motion needed to lift it out.
That answer is less tidy than “hang it 20 inches above the counter,” but it prevents the expensive version of trial and error: installing beautiful shelves and discovering that you cannot refill the machine.
This guide turns the decision into five measurements you can take before drilling. It does not replace the instructions for your shelf, fasteners, wall or coffee appliance.
Start with five measurements
Record these numbers for your actual setup:
- Countertop to the machine’s highest fixed point. Measure the machine where it will sit, including feet, hopper and accessories that remain attached.
- Countertop to the highest operating point. Open every lid, remove the water tank, refill the hopper and place your hand where it must go. Record the highest point reached during any normal task.
- Required appliance clearance. Check the manual for ventilation, heat, steam, service and placement instructions. If the manual specifies more space than your physical motion test, the manual governs.
- Tallest shelf item plus removal motion. A 6-inch mug may need more than 6 inches if you must lift it off a peg or reach over a shelf lip.
- Planned shelf load and mounting conditions. Add the items you genuinely expect to store, then select a shelf system that is rated and installed for the wall you have.

Calculate the lower shelf from the machine’s operating envelope
Use this as a planning relationship, not as a building-code formula:
Lower shelf underside height above the countertop = the machine’s highest operating point + the greater clearance required by its manufacturer.
The “operating point” is the key. A machine can look comfortably short with everything closed yet need substantial room above it when you swing up a pod lid, lift out a rear water reservoir or pour beans into a top hopper. A steam wand also creates a side-to-side working zone that a low, deep shelf can make awkward.

The Breville Barista Express manual, for example, shows a machine with a top hopper, removable tank and top cup-warming area. It is evidence that one popular machine has several upper-area interactions—not evidence that every espresso machine needs the same number of inches. Measure the exact model and follow its current manual.
Before installing anything, run a full routine:
- refill water;
- add beans, a pod or grounds;
- remove and replace every part normally cleaned;
- lock and remove the portafilter if the machine has one;
- use the steam wand and move the milk pitcher;
- place and remove a mug from the work area.
Mark the highest and widest points with painter’s tape. That taped boundary is more useful than a generic shelf-height chart.
Choose shelf depth by testing reach, not by copying a photo
A deeper shelf stores larger objects, but depth is not free space. It projects into your sightline, creates a harder-to-clean underside and can make the appliance feel tucked into a cave. A very shallow shelf looks lighter but may not safely support the base of the jars or mugs you want to place on it.
Commercial products illustrate why depth is a variable rather than a rule. One current IKEA LACK shelf is listed at 10 1/4 inches deep, while the BERGSHULT/GRANHULT combination is 11 3/4 inches deep. Those are examples of specific products, not recommended coffee-bar dimensions.

Test depth in the room before ordering:
- Cut cardboard to the proposed shelf width and depth.
- Tape it at the proposed underside height or have someone hold it securely.
- Stand where you make coffee and look toward the machine controls and water fill.
- Repeat the full operating routine.
- Place the largest planned shelf item on the cardboard and confirm its entire base is supported.
If the cardboard blocks your view or forces your wrist around an edge, change the depth or raise the shelf. If the intended jars overhang, use a deeper shelf or store them elsewhere. Do not solve overhang by assuming a decorative lip or adhesive will compensate for inadequate support.

Set vertical spacing from the tallest item you actually use
Shelf-to-shelf spacing should be measured between the top surface of the lower shelf and the underside of the shelf above. Start with the tallest object assigned to that level, then add the motion needed to grip and lift it.
The lower open shelf usually works best for frequently used, lighter items: everyday mugs, a small coffee canister, filters or a scale. That is not a residential shelf standard, but the general principle is sensible here: the shelf you touch every morning should not require an uncomfortable reach.

Use the actual objects during layout:
- Mugs: grip the handle naturally and lift the mug as you would when half awake. Include the lift needed to clear a shelf lip.
- Lidded canisters: decide whether you will remove the entire canister or open it in place. Those motions require different space.
- Pour-over drippers: allow room for delicate handles and for lifting without striking the shelf above.
- Decor: place it only after functional objects pass the test. A plant that trails into the machine’s refill path is not harmless decoration.

Treat shelf width and load as one installation system
Shelf width should visually relate to the cabinet or counter below, but appearance cannot determine the span. A floating shelf is a system consisting of the shelf body, hidden or visible brackets, fasteners, wall material, attachment points and the distribution of the load.

Three coffee-station layouts and what changes
The same measuring method produces different shelf positions because the equipment and motions differ.
Pod machine with a top-opening lid
The lid’s full arc usually controls the lower shelf position. Open it with a pod in your other hand and check whether your knuckles reach above the lid. If the water tank also lifts upward, test that motion separately. A narrow pod machine does not automatically permit a low shelf.
Semi-automatic espresso machine with a hopper
The bean hopper, removable tank, cup-warming surface and cleaning access all matter. Keep the first shelf outside the full service path, not merely above the stainless-steel body. Make sure a deep shelf does not obscure controls or make pouring water awkward.

Pour-over station
There may be no tall machine, but the working height can increase when you lift a gooseneck kettle and pour over a dripper. Test the full pouring posture. Store filters and the scale low and close; reserve higher shelves for backup beans or infrequently used servers.
A drill-last installation sequence
Use this order to keep the design reversible until the important conflicts are resolved:
- Fix the cabinet, counter and appliance positions.
- Measure the appliance closed and during every normal operation.
- Inventory shelf items, including their filled weight and removal motion.
- Make full-size cardboard shelf templates.
- Test sightlines, reach, lid paths, steam-wand movement and cleaning access.
- Select a shelf system whose current instructions match the wall and load.
- Mark the final underside and attachment locations only after those checks pass.
- Install exactly as directed, then load gradually and recheck stability.
Frequently asked questions
How high should the first shelf be above a coffee bar?
High enough to clear the actual machine during every normal operation plus any manufacturer-required clearance. Measure from the countertop to the lower shelf’s underside. A universal number cannot account for different lids, reservoirs, hoppers, steam wands or manuals.
How much space should be left between two floating shelves?
Measure the tallest object assigned to the lower shelf, then add the space needed to grip and lift it out. Test with the real mug or canister before drilling. Display-only shelves can be tighter than functional storage, but they still must follow the shelf system’s instructions.
How deep should coffee-bar shelves be?

Should the shelves match the width of the coffee cabinet?
They may align visually, but the safe span is governed by the chosen shelf system and the wall, not by the cabinet width. Mock up the proportion, then confirm the exact product’s allowed installation and load.

- Measure the machine fully open, not only its closed height.
- Follow appliance requirements when they exceed your motion test.
- Size shelf spacing with the real mugs and canisters.
- Test depth and sightlines with full-size cardboard.
- Keep frequently used light items within easy reach.
