There is no universal caffeine winner among espresso, Americano, latte, pour-over, and cold brew. Espresso is usually the most concentrated, but a larger pour-over or a strong cold brew may contain more total caffeine per serving. An Americano and a latte made with the same espresso shots usually start with roughly the same caffeine, even though they taste and look completely different.
The reliable comparison is not the drink name. It is the amount of dry coffee used, the number of espresso shots, the final serving size, and—especially for cold brew—whether the drink is a concentrate and how it was diluted.

Concentration and total caffeine are different
Two questions are frequently mixed together:
- Concentration: how much caffeine is present in each milliliter or fluid ounce?
- Dose per serving: how much caffeine is in the whole drink you consume?
Espresso can be much more concentrated while remaining a small serving. Filter coffee can be less concentrated while delivering a larger total because the cup is much bigger. Mathematically, total caffeine is concentration multiplied by beverage volume. In practice, consumers rarely know an exact concentration, so shot count and coffee dose are better clues.

Laboratory testing confirms that “one coffee” is not a stable unit. A study of specialty coffee-shop drinks found caffeinated samples ranging from 58 to 259 mg per dose. Even the same drink purchased from the same outlet on six consecutive days ranged from 259 to 564 mg in that study. A separate analysis of 20 commercial espressos found about a six-fold difference in caffeine. These samples do not tell us what every modern café serves; they show why an exact universal chart would be misleading.
How much caffeine is in espresso?
Espresso is a pressurized extraction made from a relatively large coffee dose and a small amount of beverage. It therefore tends to have high caffeine concentration. Total caffeine, however, depends on more than the familiar tiny cup.
Check these variables:
- Single, double, or another basket recipe. Some cafés use a double basket as the default and divide it; others serve the full double extraction.
- Dry-coffee dose. Two “double shots” can start with different amounts of ground coffee.
- Bean composition. Robusta generally contains more caffeine than Arabica, while blends can combine them.
- Extraction recipe. Grind, beverage yield, time, temperature, and flow influence what reaches the cup.
Do not use espresso volume alone as a dose calculator. A longer shot contains more water, but that does not guarantee caffeine increases in direct proportion to the liquid volume.
Americano vs. latte: count the shots first
An Americano is espresso plus water. A latte is espresso plus steamed milk, usually with a relatively thin foam layer. If both drinks contain the same espresso shots, they begin with approximately the same caffeine contribution from coffee.
Water in an Americano spreads those shots through a larger drink. Milk in a latte softens bitterness, changes texture, adds sweetness and nutrients, and makes the coffee taste gentler. Neither addition removes caffeine already present in the espresso.
This creates a useful ordering rule: compare shot count before comparing cup size. A 12 oz latte with two shots may contain more caffeine than a larger 16 oz latte with one shot. Conversely, an Americano made with three shots can contain more than a two-shot latte even if the latte tastes richer.

Imagine a café measures one double espresso base at 130 mg. These are illustrative numbers, not universal values:

Why pour-over can contain more than one espresso
Pour-over sends hot water through a bed of ground coffee and a filter. The drink is less concentrated than espresso, but it often uses more water and may use more dry coffee for the full serving. This is why a mug of pour-over can deliver more total caffeine than a single espresso shot without tasting as dense.

To compare a pour-over meaningfully, record:
- the dry-coffee dose, such as 15 g, 20 g, or 30 g;
- the brew water and final beverage size;
- whether the whole brew is one serving or shared;
- the coffee species or blend, when known;
- whether the roaster or retailer publishes a measured caffeine value.
A “cup” is not a dependable measurement. It may mean a small household cup, an 8 fl oz reference serving, a 12 oz café drink, or an even larger mug. Ask for ounces or milliliters.
Does cold brew have more caffeine?
Sometimes—but “cold brew” is not one recipe. It may be brewed near ready-to-drink strength, made as a dense concentrate and diluted, served over a large amount of ice, or combined with water or milk. The label alone cannot reveal the dose.
Research explains why simple hot-versus-cold claims fail. In a controlled cold-brew study, caffeine extraction occurred quickly at first and approached a steady state after several hours. Comparisons with hot brewing depended on grind, time, roast, and the fixed experimental ratio. A broader scientific review likewise found that species, coffee-to-water ratio, grind, temperature, time, pressure, and method interact.

Worked example: dilution changes the cup
Suppose a measured cold-brew concentrate contains 200 mg in a 4 oz portion:
- Add 4 oz water for a 1:1 drink: the cup becomes about 8 oz but still contains 200 mg.
- Add 8 oz water for a 1:2 drink: the cup becomes about 12 oz but still contains 200 mg.
- Use only 2 oz concentrate and add 6 oz water: the finished 8 oz drink contains half the concentrate portion, or about 100 mg.
Water changes concentration. The amount of concentrate used changes total caffeine. Ice can dilute a drink as it melts, but it does not remove caffeine you already poured into the glass.
A better way to compare any café order
Use this four-step caffeine audit:
1. Look for a published value
Some chains and packaged-drink makers publish caffeine by size. Use the exact product and serving, because formulations change. The FDA notes that caffeine amounts and container sizes vary and recommends contacting the manufacturer when necessary.
2. Ask how many espresso shots are included
This is the fastest comparison for espresso, Americano, latte, cappuccino, mocha, cortado, and many iced espresso drinks. Do not assume each cup size uses the same shot count.
3. For brewed coffee, ask about dose and serving volume
A recipe using 30 g of coffee for one large serving is not comparable to one using 15 g. The dry dose is not identical to the caffeine extracted, but it is a more meaningful clue than the drink name alone.
4. For cold brew, ask “concentrate or ready to drink?”
Then check the concentrate portion and dilution. If a package publishes milligrams per serving, verify how many servings the bottle contains.
Why taste is a poor caffeine meter
Bitterness, roastiness, body, and intensity are sensory properties, not direct caffeine tests. A dark roast can taste stronger while a larger light-roast filter coffee delivers more caffeine. Milk can make a two-shot latte taste gentle. A cold brew may taste smooth even when the concentrate dose is high.
The word strong is especially ambiguous. It can mean:
- more ground coffee per water;
- higher dissolved-solids concentration;
- darker roast flavor;
- more bitterness or body;
- or more caffeine per serving.
Say which meaning you intend. “I want two espresso shots” or “What is the caffeine in this 12 oz size?” is more precise than “Make it strong.”
