Start with the official manual for the exact model. Measure three different envelopes—static size, operating movement and heat/steam exposure—and use the largest one to select the cabinet opening. Measure three envelopes, not one machine box

Retail dimensions usually describe the closed appliance. A coffee station needs three separate measurements.

Static envelope

Measure the machine at rest: width, depth and height. Include feet, rear cord guard, drip-tray projection and any permanently attached handle or side tank. Measure the cabinet opening at its narrowest point, including hinges, door tracks and face-frame lips.

Static clearance answers only one question: can the appliance enter and sit level? It does not prove that the machine can be used there.

Operating envelope

Heat and steam envelope

Identify where warm air, steam and hot water actually go. Check vents, cup-warming surfaces, hot-water spouts and the steam wand. The goal is not to seal the cabinet from all warmth; it is to avoid blocking a designed air path or repeatedly driving hot moisture into one cabinet surface.

Do not estimate this envelope by holding a hand over a running vent. Read the manual first and observe only during normal use from a safe position.

Build a model-specific clearance card

Create one short record for the machine before buying the cabinet:

  • exact brand and model number;
  • official manual URL and revision;
  • appliance dimensions and weight;
  • manufacturer-stated surface and placement requirements;
  • top, rear and side clearance where specified;
  • intake and exhaust locations;
  • water-tank and hopper access direction;
  • steam-wand and pitcher movement;
  • whether built-in or enclosed use is permitted;

This prevents model leakage. Nespresso, for example, states that its commercial Momento Coffee & Milk machine needs at least 50 mm of free space on all sides for ventilation. Protect the space above the machine from steam

The underside of a shelf is usually the first surface to show that the setup is too tight. Look for beads of water, a damp seam, softened edge banding, cloudy finish, discoloration or a recurring warm patch.

IKEA’s kitchen care guidance specifically says not to position a coffee maker or kettle so steam flows up against the underside of cabinet frames and doors. It notes that heat and high humidity increase the risk of worktops or doors absorbing moisture and swelling. That advice applies to the identified IKEA materials, but the planning principle is broader: redirect the source rather than relying only on a protective film.

Practical controls are simple:

  1. Move the machine toward the front of the worktop when the manual permits.
  2. Keep a top-fill reservoir from being opened directly beneath a vulnerable shelf seam.
  3. Direct steam-wand work toward the open room, not toward a side panel.
  4. Wipe condensate promptly and inspect the surface after it dries.
  5. Do not add a shelf above the machine until the complete hot workflow has been tested.

Steam-wand clearance is a hand-and-pitcher problem

Frothing milk needs more than the pitcher’s width. Your hand must hold the handle, lower and tilt the pitcher, purge the wand over an approved area and remove the pitcher without striking a side panel. Hot metal and steam also need a clear path away from stored towels, paper filters and finish edges.

Run this movement test with an empty, cool pitcher before powering the machine. Mark the furthest side and front position. If your wrist contacts the cabinet or the wand must be forced into an unnatural angle, the opening is too narrow for that workflow.

Use an appliance garage as open working space

An appliance garage can make a coffee bar look calm when the machine is off. Its door mechanism, shelf travel and rear construction determine whether it can become safe working space.

Blum describes lift-up hardware as suitable for a countertop appliance garage because the front moves parallel to the cabinet and stays out of the immediate work zone. That is a furniture-function claim, not permission to run any coffee machine in a closed enclosure.

Use this conservative sequence unless the exact instructions say otherwise:

  1. Open the garage door fully.
  2. Pull the approved shelf or machine forward to the measured working position.
  3. Confirm vents, tank, hopper, portafilter and steam path are clear.
  4. Brew and steam only in that verified open position.
  5. Finish the cleaning cycle and allow heat and moisture to dissipate.
  6. Confirm the machine and cabinet are dry and cooled as required.
  7. Push the machine back and close the door for storage.

Never assume that adding a grille converts a closed cabinet into a designed appliance enclosure. IKEA’s ventilated refrigerator cabinet, for example, uses top and bottom cutouts as part of a specific integrated-appliance system. It demonstrates that ventilation is a planned inlet-and-outlet path—not simply the presence of a hole.

Test the layout with a cardboard mock-up

Before ordering furniture, build a full-size bay from cardboard or tape the boundaries onto an existing counter.

  1. Mark the opening width, height and usable depth.
  2. Add the thickness of doors, hinges, tracks and a pull-out shelf.
  3. Place the real machine or a weight-safe cardboard model inside.
  4. Add the manufacturer clearances without rounding them down.
  5. Simulate reservoir removal, hopper filling, brewing, steaming and cleaning.
  6. Trace the portafilter and pitcher sweep.

Run a first-week heat and moisture check

For the first week, inspect the setup after each normal session once it is safe to do so. Record:

  • condensation on the cabinet ceiling or door;
  • water near seams and edge banding;
  • a recurring hot spot on a side or rear panel;
  • blocked or dusty vent areas;
  • a machine that must be pulled by its cord;
  • a water tank or tray that cannot be removed level;

A film may change cleanability, but it does not move heat or moisture away. It can also hide condensation at an edge. Redirect steam and preserve inspection access.
